Taiwan

Hello

I just got promoted to LC covering foreign affairs issues

I was wondering why there’s so much stuff about this Taiwan tax treaty

We keep passing it but it keeps dying in the senate

why?

Huh, you weren’t kidding. Even has 43 cosponsors in the Senate.

I’m somewhat surprised they haven’t just UC’d this. I’ve worked on this issue a bit and I haven’t heard of a single senator actually opposing this.

Rand Paul keeps blocking the hotline. He says it’s some data privacy provision

wtf? data privacy? this is just a model tax treaty.

but do you know who is even pushing this policy? I cover tax issues for a pretty high profile member covering tax issues and I’ve never received a meeting request for this issue.

In theory it should be TECRO who is pushing this stuff, but they’re a largely incompetent organization that doesn’t understand how the Hill works at all. If you check their affiliated FARA registrants, you can tell how they’re just getting fleeced.

You weren’t kidding. They’re paying Ballard an ungodly amount and haven’t gotten a single Truth Social out of yet.

Yeah, I have no idea what Ballard is doing for them. This article basically sums up so much of what’s gone wrong there.

Wow. $360k and all they’ve gotten out of it is this scathingWSJ article

Sullivan is going to be pushing his bill that would sanction China if they invade Taiwan again

But there was someone at policy lunch yesterday implying they might try to block it

Who is blocking it

Is it Paul again

If you have to ask, you know that’s the answer.

Figures

What are we even doing here?

This seems to be a recurring pattern for them. They spent $55k a month on Squire Patton Boggs for Robert Kapla who claims to be “A former White House official.” But looking at his LinkedIn, he was basically the coffee gopher. He wasn’t even a policy advisor.

Figures they couldn’t get their tax treaty done even under Biden. Idiots have no idea what they’re doing.

Of course it’s Square Patton Boggs. They’ve just been coasting off their reputation from fifty years ago. Completely incompetent and it’s no wonder that their tax treaty didn’t passed with such idiots lobbying for them

If Squire is a shitshow, which lobbying operations are actually good / worth the money?

Can we also talk about how Taiwan is now going on pro-Trump podcasters lol

“Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te and his top officials have given a blitz of interviews to conservative US figures in recent months, using those platforms to promote Taiwan’s security issues to so-called MAGA audiences. During such appearances, they’ve touted the common democratic values underpinning ties with the US, and encouraged deeper trade and investment links.”

“Alexander Yui, Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to the US, has led the charge from Washington. Appearing on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast, Yui told Trump’s former White House chief strategist the “diplomatic trenches are being fought very hard.” He’s followed that up with turns on Fox News and by dining with former Navy SEAL Shawn Ryan, whose interview with Trump last year racked up some 4.6 million views.”

honestly a much better use of time and money than squire patton boggs

People actually watch War Room and Shawn Ryan so they’re trying

Well based on wikipedias, he seems to be an actually qualified career diplomat vs the last one who was a political pick.
