Between the election results yesterday and this scumbag dying, it really is like Christmas came early
Here here, the worst part about it all is that he never had to answer for his crimes before the Hague. Dude should’ve gotten the Nuremberg treatment.
wtf is wrong with you people? I can’t believe you’re this happy over somebody dying.
Let me count the ways:
-
He basically started the Iraq War on a lie. Cheney was the loudest voice in the room pushing the invasion, selling the whole “weapons of mass destruction” and al-Qaeda connection story that turned out to be completely false.
-
The guy loves torture. He was a key architect of the “enhanced interrogation” program. We’re talking waterboarding and other brutal techniques. Worse, he’s totally unrepentant and has said he’d “do it again in a minute.”
-
He gaslit the world on the definition of torture. When people pointed out that waterboarding is torture, he just denied it. This is wild, considering the U.S. prosecuted Japanese soldiers for doing the exact same thing after World War II.
-
It’s not just a meme; he’s been called an actual war criminal. High-level U.S. officials and international groups have stated that his policies constituted war crimes. There was even a symbolic tribunal in Malaysia that found him and other Bush officials guilty in absentia.
-
He didn’t give a damn if innocent people were tortured. When confronted with the fact that some detainees who were brutalized were later found to be innocent, his response was basically a shrug. He said he was more worried about “bad guys” being released than the “few” innocent people who suffered.
-
He treated the Geneva Conventions like a pesky suggestion. He was the one who argued that the U.S. should just toss aside international laws on how to treat prisoners, effectively tearing up the rulebook for war.
-
His old company got rich off the war he started. Isn’t it a bit convenient that Halliburton, where he was CEO, landed billions in no-bid contracts in Iraq right after the invasion?
-
He tried to turn the President into a king. Cheney was the biggest champion of expanding executive power, arguing that the President should be able to do almost anything without oversight from Congress or the courts, all in the name of “national security.”
-
He basically built the throne for Trump. All that work to create a presidency that could act like a king and ignore the rules? Cheney broke the norms so a guy like Trump could come along and completely shatter them. Plus, the constant lying about Iraq destroyed public trust in government and the media, creating the perfect opening for someone to scream “fake news” and “drain the swamp.”
::mic drop::
Don’t forget he and his buddies at Halliburton made an absolute killing off the Iraq war. Privatizing war was his real legacy.
Everyone in here acting like Cheney was uniquely evil. Did we forget about the drone program under Obama that killed civilians? Both parties are complicit in the military-industrial complex.
That’s a lazy comparison. The drone program had serious problems, but Cheney was the architect of a ground invasion based on lies and an officially sanctioned global torture regime. It’s not the same league.
Honestly, the scariest thing about Cheney is how he supercharged the ‘Unitary Executive Theory.’ The idea that if the president does it, it’s not illegal. We are still living in the world he built.
Exactly. He walked so Trump could run. Broke all the guardrails of executive power on purpose. The damage he did is generational and possibly fatal in the long term for American democracy.
